Two Hundred Years From Now

Recovering an object is not the expense. Keeping it alive for the next two centuries is, and that bill starts the day it leaves the water and never stops.

The Vasa has now been out of the water longer than she was ever under it. She sank on her maiden voyage in 1628, was raised from Stockholm harbour in 1961, and sixty-five years later her conservation is still going on. The polyethylene glycol that replaced the water in her timbers was sprayed until 1979. Around the year 2000 the wood began producing acid, a chemistry nobody had anticipated at recovery. The iron bolts fitted to hold the hull together when she came up are themselves corroding now, and they are being replaced, hundreds at a time, by people who were not born when she was raised. She stands in a hall where temperature and humidity are held to a narrow tolerance by a system that runs every hour of every day and will run every hour of every day for as long as the ship exists.

Note what that means. The Vasa did not cost what it cost to lift her. She costs what it costs to keep her, and that figure has no final line. The last letter in this series was about the day rate that decides whether a wreck is ever excavated. This one is about the meter that starts on the day an object is saved and never switches off.

The treatment is the cheap part

Recovery gets the photograph. Conservation is the invoice, and almost nobody reads it, because it is slow and it is unglamorous and it arrives long after the ship has sailed home.

The times involved are not intuitive. Iron pulled from salt water is loaded with chloride, and left alone it will destroy itself from the inside as the salts draw moisture and drive corrosion. Removing them means months to years of soaking in treatment baths, and a single large object such as a cannon can sit in solution for years before it is stable enough to leave. Waterlogged wood is worse. The water holding the cell walls open has to be exchanged for a consolidant, usually across years of impregnation, and then dried under controlled conditions so the timber does not collapse as it gives up its moisture. The Mary Rose was sprayed from the mid-1990s until 2013, then dried under close control, roughly two decades of active treatment for one hull, before she was moved into the sealed, climate-managed gallery where she lives today.

And here is the part that undoes the word "finished." A conserved object is not cured. It has been stabilised, and stabilisation is a condition that has to be held, not a state that is reached. The Vasa's corroding bolts are the whole lesson in one detail: even a museum-grade treatment, done by a national institution with a permanent budget, generates new problems decades on that cost new money to solve. Conservation is not an event at the end of an excavation. It is a liability that begins there.

Hold that against a grant

This is where the arithmetic turns cruel. A research grant is a one-time award spent over a year or two. Perpetual care is a commitment with no term at all. That mismatch is sharper than the ship-time mismatch in No. 002, because ship time at least ends when the season ends. Conservation does not end. A season can be funded. A century of climate control in a sealed gallery cannot be funded by any grant that has ever been written, because grants have closing dates and the obligation does not.

So an object lifted from the seabed is not an asset that has been secured. It is a running cost that has been acquired, and the cost outlives the excavation, the funding cycle, and quite often the organisation that did the lifting.

The counterargument, and it is the strongest one against a company

Here is the objection that should keep anyone in this business honest, because it is aimed precisely at the commercial part.

A museum is built to be permanent. A company is not. An operation can recover an object, conserve it properly, put it on display to real acclaim, and then, ten or twenty years later, run out of money or interest and simply be gone, and the climate control goes with it. The academy's deepest objection to commercial recovery is not really the moment of lifting. It is the abandonment that can come afterward. Who pays for the humidity in the year 2226? A national museum can at least point to an institution meant to still exist. A company that cannot answer that question has not rescued an object from the sea. It has moved it from a slow clock to a faster one, and called that a rescue.

That criticism is correct, and it cannot be answered with good intentions or a strong exhibition. It can only be answered with a structure that outlives the people who built it.

The bill this comes with

So the standard this letter obligates the company to is a single sentence, and it is the most expensive one in the series: do not recover what you cannot endow.

That means the long-term care is budgeted before the object is lifted, not the treatment alone but the perpetual maintenance behind it, and it means every recovered object has a named permanent custodian obligated to hold it after Treasure Experience is gone. A recovery with no custodian is not preservation. It is relocation with better lighting. The test is not whether an artifact looks its best at the opening. It is whether there is a funded, institutional answer to two questions asked about the year 2226: who holds this, and who pays to hold it. If those answers do not exist before recovery, the honest conclusion is that the object is safer left where the sea has been keeping it for nothing.

The sea conserved it for free. Taking it out means paying, forever, for what the water was doing for nothing.
